History of the city of Van Nuys
The earliest recorded history of Los Angeles dates back
to 1542. When Juan Cabrillo described the San Fernando Valley as “The
Valley of Smokes” The smoke or as we call it today “smog” came from the
bonfires of the Tongvas Indians who lived in the area. More than 200 years
later in 1781 , a group of Spanish settlers founded a pueblo and named it
for “Our Lady, Queen of Angels” and thus the city of Los Angeles was born
.
Van Nuys located inside the city of Los Angeles, is named after Isaac Van
Nuys , who along with Isaac Lankershin Founded the San Fernando Valley
Homestead Association in 1869, so well has he acted his part in both
public and private life that the city of Van Nuys has been enriched by his
example, his character and his labor. In the early 1900’s east coast
filmmakers landed in Hollywood not only for the weather but to possibly
elude legal troubles from using Thomas Edison’s movie camera patent. The
studios flourished and Los Angeles became the movie capital of the world.
The airport was built in 1928 and at time was called the “Los Angeles
Metropolitan Airport” In 1929 Hollywood, discovered the Van Nuys airport
which became popular use by many celebrities of the time. In fact,
Hollywood loved the little airport so much that iy frequently used the
airstrip for many famous movies. In 1057 the little airport was formerly
christened the “Van Nuys Airport”.
The City of San Fernando is located in the northeast corner of Los
Angeles County's San Fernando Valley. Situated between three major
freeways, San Fernando is surrounded by the City of Los Angeles. The San
Fernando Valley region is a geographic area which includes several
municipalities including a large portion of the L.A.’s city limits.
Many communities within the San Fernando Valley are part of the City of
Los Angeles. (Examples include: Arleta, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Encino,
Granada Hills, Lake View Terrace, Mission Hills, North Hollywood, North
